Growing up I was always told that I was so lucky that my mother was such a great cook.  I have so many fond memories of helping my mother prepare all sorts of traditional Taiwanese dishes.

A (Maybe Not So)  Brief History

I grew up in the little town of Sudbury, Massachusetts with my parents, and an older brother and an older sister.  Needless to say, being the baby of the family meant that I felt like an only child in the 2 years prior to starting school.  This gave me a lot of time at home during the day with my mother who, as I learned later, was an amazing cook.

My family is from Taiwan and both of my parents immigrated from there, after having my older brother.  It was the late 70s and early 80s so there was little to no access to traditional Taiwanese fare.  Luckily, we were only a 40 minute drive to Boston, but really, Chinatown.  This gave us some amount of access to more authentic Asian cuisine.  However, it really meant my mother had some access to ingredients to be able to make her own traditional dishes.

My mother learned how to make all sorts of traditional Taiwanese dishes from her mother and since we could not buy it here, we made it ourselves.  From dumplings to soy milk and beyond, my childhood was filled with memories of food.  Although I always helped, I learned later that it didn't mean I actually learned how to make anything.  I was an expert eater though.

This project is to help preserve my mother's recipes and share some memories.  Hopefully in the process I will also learn to cook.  Probably not.

Update (Jan 2023): The project has pivoted to more of a traditional food blog of sorts. I have written a post with more details.
