Hi.

I'm recording my adventures in exploring my mother's food, my own food adventures and sometimes travel. That is Tyson, getting in the way as usual.

A Chain Restaurant? Say it Ain't So

A Chain Restaurant? Say it Ain't So

We went to see Across the Spiderverse (great movie, go see it) and I was starved afterwards. The choices directly next to the Astoria theater are pretty slim, and I dislike Applebee’s intensely and I do really like Uno’s most since there aren’t so many around, so that’s where we went.

We started out with the Shrimp & Crab dip.

There was probably not enough chunks of crab & shrimp, but the plus side was the buttered toast points.

Then of course… deep dish (I had the Numero Uno and my companion had the Chicago Meat Market). Interestingly they have Detroit style now on the menu, but I rarely get to have deep dish, so I went that way.

Now that i’ve had the real thing, I can tell these aren’t up to par, but honestly, still not bad considering I cannot find many places here that serve it. Over the lockdown period, I did order frozen ones from Lou Malnati’s which were great and convenient. If you’re craving the real Chicago pizzas, this is a great option.

This time we strategized our eating better and ate only half of our pizzas to leave room for dessert.

It’s such a novelty to have either a cookie or a brownie (we had the brownie) in a deep dish pan, but I still love it. They gave us such a huge hunk of ice cream compared to the whipped cream, but the brownie was ooey gooey, the way I like it, especially with the cold ice cream.

This is my go-to after a movie in Astoria, although I know we could likely just walk a block and find some better options. Feels nostalgic.
