A new old discovery
I cannot remember how I heard of it, but after living in NYC for nearly 17 years, last year I learned about the Chopped Cheese sandwich. My assumption was it was a specialty from a different city, but as far as I know now, it is a specialty in many bodegas and originated there as well. Supposedly the best are in Harlem or the surrounding neighborhoods. I searched in Astoria and found a great place for sanwiches (Compton’s, check it out!) including their version of a chopped cheese.
After a tiring holiday week, I arrived home and this was the first thought of what I wanted (I actually wanted Chicken & Rice, but the truck was not there.. holiday for them too?). In my rush to eat, I missed a picture of the fried ravioli (in place of fries or tots for me!). But I did capture one of my sandwich…. so I did not completely fail in sticking to my 2023 goal that I had just made earlier that day. Behold:
I elected for a different sandwich the first time I went to Compton’s so I was not about to deny myself another chance at the chopped cheese. Really tender meat since it was finely chopped and very well incorporated cheese throughout the meat. Very much like a Philly Cheesesteak, except the chopped cheese also traditionally includes lettuce, tomato and mayo. Highly recommend. I can’t wait to finish the leftovers.
