Sushi & Ice Cream
Spent last Saturday out running errands and decided to stop by Flushing Meadows Park on a whim as my companion had never been. Equipped with a craving for sushi, we found a place nearby using the ever popular Google Search and decided on Mito in Forest Hills (apparently there are also locations in Yonkers & Bayside). Note to self, edit your order or you’ll end up with way too much food. However, there were no regrets on any part of the meal. We decided to start with a couple apps, the Rock Shrimp Tempura and the Sushi Pizza (tuna, always my preference).
The shrimp definitely came out a little different than I expected - mostly since tempura is not usually pre-sauced as this was, but it wasn’t bad. No complaints although fairly standard.
Sushi pizza is usually something I like to order when I see it on the menu since nearly every place has a different take on it. I’m accustomed to a thin crispy wonton used as the “dough” but this take was interesting where they used something more like a scallion pancake as the base. In addition, there was a generous heap of guacamole on top almost used like the “sauce.” All in all, it was quite flavorful and I enjoyed it thoroughly. However, due to the volume of guacamole on there, it’s very filling. Next we shared a few rolls, thinking it wouldn’t be too much. Wrong.
As you can see, 3 rolls yielded quite a bit of sushi, especially when one was a simple Tuna Avocado roll. I can’t speak to the Volcano roll as I tend not to eat spicier foods so I left that to my companion. The Monster Lobster roll was pretty good, it included some mango, and I love the salty sweet combination, plus who doesn’t like mango? But most randomly, the Monster Lobster roll also came with a tiny bowl of what I think was advertised as tiny bits of lobster tempura but I think was actually more shrimp. So it felt like pretty much the same as our shrimp app. Now, normally you’d think this would be the end of the meal. but we were too greedy and had more food, this time entrees. To be fair though, I knew I would likely not be eating it for lunch and instead was saving it for dinner.
My companion had the hibachi chicken fried rice. Nothing of note so there is no photo. I ended up eating this the next day for lunch, but it held up well - the art of heating up leftovers is real. The duck was crispy and on first glance it looks like it only comes with broccoli and a carrot, but the duck is sitting on a bed of shaved zucchini and there was also one spear of asparagus. The sauce was sweet and very ginger-y and it came with also a cake of fried mashed potatoes. In retrospect I should have paid attention to that inclusion since I also ordered a side of rice with the dish.
Afterwards, we were in the mood for something sweet and with us being in Forest Hills, the first thing to come to mind was Eddie’s Sweet Shop. I have a huge affinity towards old school historic places and Eddie’s is a former soda jerk spot and is still hugely popular for its ice cream although it does still have a candy counter as well.
We went fairly simple here, although I suppose it depends on how you look at it. Even though my go-to is usually mint-chip, for some reason I went with the coffee chip with M&Ms. I probably could have done without the M&Ms, but they sure do add a pop of color, don’t they? My companion went with a simple sundae with Cherry Vanilla, the home-made whipped cream (which yes, comes from the old school fridge pictured in the back) and a cherry on top.
All in all, a fun and tasty impromptu food detour on an errand day.
