A classic breakfast (with some substitutions & a new NY staple
This weekend I attended the Meet the Breeds event at the Javits Center. Basically we got to pet 100s of different breeds of dogs. Highly recommended. So my companion and I decided to find some breakfast near the convention center to save some time. My original idea was to poke around Mercado Little Spain to see what breakfast options they offer… but they don’t open until 11am. Oops. So breakfast cart food it was. I wanted a BEC (Bacon, Egg, Cheese) and was trying to decided between a croissant or a bagel, but the decision was made for me. The cart guy told me he had nothing left but hero bread. Not sure if it was ploy to be able to charge me more, but I was hungry and didn’t want to go somewhere else.
This was the first time I’ve had a breakfast sandwich on hero bread. It wasn’t bad, I do like that instead of scrambling the eggs it was a whole fried egg instead. However, it didn’t feel like real bacon - either it was ham that he fried up or it was turkey bacon. All in all, it felt like a lot of substitutes, but overall it did the trick. And the view wasn’t bad either. For dinner, we headed to the mall and decided to do Shake Shack. Pro tip: get the app and order ahead of time for pickup - you’ll likely bypass an extra long line, which is definitely what happened with us.
I went with the avocado cheeseburger with a double patty (we walked a LOT at the convention center and I didn’t really eat lunch) with a side of fries and of course lots of BBQ sauce. My companion had the flat top grilled hot dog (after having a chili cheese dog not only at the convention center, but also for breakfast at one of the other carts). We also both had a large strawberry lemonade since the app was promoting a BOGO lemonade deal. I really wanted a custard shake also… but I couldn’t eat anymore. Next time!
